Nepal Implements GPS Tracking Chips for Everest Climbers
Nepal has already implemented chips for tracking in the past. In 2017, the country’s tourism department provided some Everest conquerors with GPS trackers.
Now only those climbers who have a tracking device with them during the ascent can climb Everest, in order to reduce search and rescue operations if necessary. This was reported by CNN on Saturday, March 2.
Tourists will be able to rent a special chip, paying $10-15 for it. The chip must be returned after completing the route.
According to Rakesh Gurung, director of Nepal’s tourism department, the spring climbing season on Everest will soon begin, lasting from March to May.
«Everest is dangerous to climb, and in recent years it has become increasingly crowded and even more dangerous for life. Last year, Nepal issued a record number of permits for climbing Everest during the spring season. This season also became one of the deadliest in recent times: 12 confirmed deaths and five missing climbers,» he said.
Gurung emphasized that the country’s authorities are trying to reduce the number of deaths among climbers and are taking other measures to ensure the safety of those wishing to conquer the summit.
«Last year, Nepal’s Tourism Board announced that climbers on any mountain must obtain a tracking information management card from an authorized mountaineering agency to ensure visitor safety and prevent unauthorized hikes,» he said.
