Hungary presents 11 demands to Ukraine regarding rights of national minorities

Ukraine’s Commitment to Protecting Minority Rights

According to the European Truth, Hungary has presented a list of 11 demands to Ukraine concerning the rights of national minorities, crucial for unlocking our country’s access to the European Union. These demands predominantly focus on the protection of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.

Vice Prime Minister for European Integration Olga Stefanishyna reported Ukraine’s willingness to meet these demands put forth by Hungary.

«Ukraine is genuinely dedicated to addressing and fully executing these 11 issues to reinforce the safeguarding of national minorities’ rights in our nation,» Stefanishyna stated during the initial intergovernmental conference on Ukraine’s EU membership talks.

While some of the Hungarian requirements are deemed acceptable, others entail unreasonable stipulations that necessitate modifications to Ukrainian legislation regarding national minorities. For instance, Hungary advocates for the acknowledgment of schools with a Hungarian class as Hungarian schools, along with the revocation of particular norms dictating the Hungarian population size essential for recognizing a territory as Hungarian.

Moreover, Hungary underlined the urgency of electoral law revisions to ensure adequate representation of Hungarians in the Verkhovna Rada, sparking significant debate.
