Olena Shuliak, the head of the «Servant of the People» party, highlighted the significance of using wood in the reconstruction of Ukraine. This move is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) and meeting the requirements of the Ukraine Facility program to secure 50 billion euros in funding from the EU.
Shuliak pointed out that the construction sector, responsible for 35% of CO2 emissions, can benefit greatly from switching to wood. This shift will help mitigate the sector’s negative impact on the environment. She emphasized that wood is not only eco-friendly but also holds vast potential for economic growth and promoting green recovery in Ukraine post-war.
«The ban on exporting unprocessed wood is already showing positive results, improving the environmental situation and fostering the production of high value-added wood products like fuel pellets, furniture, and building materials,» said Shuliak.
Shuliak also underscored the necessity of updating Ukraine’s building regulations to encourage the use of wood in construction, aligning with global green building standards like the New European Bauhaus and the European Green Deal.
«The proposed amendments to building laws aim to facilitate the transition to sustainable and efficient wood-based building materials. This marks a crucial step towards Ukraine’s green recovery and its alignment with European norms,» concluded Shuliak.
