The Mystery of Australia’s Pink Sand: New Geological Discoveries

Scientists unveil new discovery about pink sand origin

Researchers from the University of Adelaide have made a groundbreaking revelation about the pink sand found on the southern beaches of Australia. They have identified broken garnet as the key factor behind the distinctive hue of the sand in this region.

Previously, it was believed that the presence of garnet in the sand was a result of weathering in the local areas where garnet originated. However, the latest research has revealed a different story.

Through their study, scientists have determined that the garnet found on Australian beaches dates back to 570-590 million years, contradicting any known local sources of this mineral. This has led to speculation that the garnet may have been transported to the beaches from elsewhere.

Based on their findings, researchers suggest that the garnet could have been brought to the Australian shores from Antarctica, during the time when it was connected to the ancient Gondwana continent approximately 590 million years ago.
