Impact of Russian Invasion on Ukraine’s Energy Sector
As a result of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, the energy sector has suffered direct losses and indirect financial damages amounting to $56.2 billion. The reconstruction needs, including the full reconstruction of destroyed objects according to the principle of «Building back better», amount to $50.5 billion. This estimate was provided by the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE).
Direct Losses in the Energy Sector
According to the analytical expert group of the Kyiv School of Economics, the direct losses of the energy sector of Ukraine as of May 2024 amount to over $16.1 billion. The largest losses were caused by the destruction of electricity generation facilities ($8.5 billion), main power transmission lines ($2.1 billion), as well as oil and gas infrastructure ($3.3 billion).
KSE points out that during the full-scale invasion, over 18 GW of electricity generation capacity were occupied, including Europe’s largest nuclear power plant — Zaporizhzhia NPP. Additionally, the Kahovska and Dniprovska hydroelectric power stations, as well as the Zmiivska and Trypillia thermal power stations, were completely destroyed.
