The Ukrainian Language Institute prepares an updated spelling: changes are coming

The Institute of the Ukrainian Language Continues Work on New Spelling

The Institute of the Ukrainian Language is continuing its efforts to improve Ukrainian spelling in order to address identified deficiencies. According to the director of the Institute, Dr. Pavlo Hrytsenko, the revised spelling is expected to be released by the end of this year.

Dr. Hrytsenko stated that the goal is to streamline the spelling, removing unnecessary elements. The Institute is collaborating with volunteers and experts to accomplish this task. The new version of the spelling will be submitted to the language standards committee for approval.

Despite some challenges, the Institute is working closely with leading scholars to ensure the accuracy of the revised spelling. Dr. Hrytsenko noted that several errors have been identified in the new Ukrainian spelling.

On May 30, the Supreme Court of Ukraine upheld the mandatory use of the Ukrainian spelling approved in 2019. The current edition was endorsed by the Cabinet of Ministers in May 2019. Although there were legal challenges in January 2021, the decision was ultimately upheld in May 2021.
