The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Approves Increase in State Border Guard Service Personnel

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has passed a bill to increase the number of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine by 15,000 military personnel. According to Zhelizniak, the government bill No. 11091 was supported by 327 deputies.

Under the law, the total number of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, within a year from the date of termination or cancellation of the martial law on the territory of Ukraine, will be up to 75,000 people, including up to 67,000 military personnel.

The government’s project was submitted in March. As stated by the government’s permanent representative in the Verkhovna Rada, Taras Melnychuk, it is related to the urgent need to form and increase the combat reserves of the State Border Guard Service within the Armed Forces and to ensure the readiness of the State Border Guard Service to control the state border in its internationally recognized boundaries in the post-war period.

The increase is also linked to an adequate response to existing and potential threats to national security at the state border, Melnychuk added.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced plans to increase the number of border troops. «We are increasing the number of border troops for both current tasks of defense against Russian aggression and for the future to ensure the long-term protection of our state borders after this war,» he said.
