Terekhov explains why buildings are being restored in Kharkiv despite the risk of new shelling

The Mayor of Kharkiv on Restoring Buildings Despite Ongoing Conflict

The mayor of Kharkiv, Igor Terekhov, spoke to TSN about the importance of restoring buildings in the city, despite the ongoing risk of shelling.

Faith in the City’s Recovery

Mayor Terekhov emphasized that delaying the repair of buildings until the end of the war would undermine the faith of residents in Kharkiv’s recovery. People are eager to restore their homes and actively support the city authorities in this effort.

Progress in Building Restoration

Despite the challenges, progress has been made in rebuilding Kharkiv. In 2022, 135 buildings were restored, followed by 57 in 2023. The plan for 2024 is to restore 157 buildings.

Challenges Faced by the City

Kharkiv is one of the most heavily shelled cities in Ukraine, with 50% of residential buildings damaged. 150,000 people were left homeless, and about 500 buildings are beyond repair.

Residents’ Resilience and Hope

Some residents have been resettled in dormitories, while others have moved to other cities and countries. However, Mayor Terekhov noted that those who left are eagerly awaiting the chance to return to Kharkiv.

Continued Restoration Efforts

Despite financial challenges, buildings in Kharkiv continue to be restored. Mayor Terekhov acknowledged that more funds are needed for a complete restoration of the housing stock.
