Restoring Kharkiv’s energy system after the destruction of TEC-5: experts’ strategy

Energy experts plan to replace TEC-5 in Kharkiv

Energy experts are considering replacing the TEC-5 in Kharkiv with gas turbine and gas piston installations, according to the director of the Energy Research Center, Oleksandr Kharchenko. This decision follows the intensification of shelling of Kharkiv’s energy facilities by Russian forces, resulting in the destruction of the city’s main energy objects.

Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that TEC-5 is currently out of commission and will require a significant amount of time to restore. Kharchenko explained that gas turbine and gas piston installations are being considered due to their mobility and smaller size, which make them easier to camouflage. Gas piston engines can be strategically placed in underground passages or abandoned workshops for quicker commissioning, while gas turbine installations can be restored within a year and a half.

Kharchenko remains optimistic about the situation in Ukraine’s energy system, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with European countries to maintain stability. Despite the challenges, the Energy Research Center is developing shutdown schedules to prevent mass power outages in other regions of the country.

Recommendations for decentralization of the heating system

Dr. of Technical Sciences, Professor, and CEO of «Solar Generation» Stanislav Ihnatiev suggests implementing decentralization of the heating system by installing modular boilers in microdistricts. This measure aims to reduce the risk of system destruction during attacks, offering a more resilient and decentralized approach to energy infrastructure.
