Recent research published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
presents a scenario of the transformation of our Sun. Initially, it will expand to the size of a red giant, reaching Mars, and then shed its outer layers, turning into a white dwarf. These processes will begin in approximately 5 billion years and will have serious consequences for the Solar System, including the possible disappearance of Mercury and Venus.
The scenario is grim for Earth:
even if the planet survives, it will lose its atmosphere and oceans, becoming uninhabitable.
