FCC strengthens measures against vulnerabilities in phone networks

The Federal Communications Commission is taking action to address vulnerabilities in telecommunication network protocols

According to The Register, the FCC is intensifying efforts to tackle existing vulnerabilities in telecommunication network protocols that could be used for remote spying and monitoring of wireless devices. Telecom operators must now provide a comprehensive report on the steps they have taken to mitigate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in SS7 and Diameter protocols. These protocols, which were developed in the 1970s and 1990s, are susceptible to attacks that allow for the tracking of user locations and interception of their calls and messages. The FCC’s initiative was prompted by a request from Senator Ron Wyden to address cybersecurity weaknesses in wireless operators.
